Judiciary Committee Advances Six Bills to Back the Blue During National Police Week

WASHINGTON – The Senate Judiciary Committee today advanced by voice vote six bipartisan law enforcement bills amid National Police Week:

• S. 736, the Lieutenant Osvaldo Albarati Stopping Prison Contraband Act would enhance safety and accountability in federal prisons by stemming the flow of contraband.
• S. 825, the Fighting Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Act of 2025 would direct the Department of Justice (DOJ) to develop treatment programs for first responders suffering from PTSD or acute stress disorders.
• S. 4394, the Promoting Police Leadership Act would improve commander-level training curriculum across law enforcement agencies.
• S. 3897, the Officer John Barnes and Chief Michael Ansbro Public Safety Officers’ Benefit Program Expansion Act of 2026 would speed up Public Safety Officers’ Benefits (PSOB) program determinations and extend benefits to additional public safety officers.
• S. 1890, the Carla Walker Act would dedicate federal grant funds to support forensic genetic genealogy (FGG) DNA analysis to help solve cold cases.
• S. 3041, the Tribal Warrant Fairness Act would allow the U.S. Marshals Service to assist Tribal law enforcement in tracking down violent criminals and searching for missing children.

Law enforcement officers deserve our wholehearted support to ensure they and their families are protected,” Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said. “The legislation the Judiciary Committee advanced this National Police Week will boost investments in local police departments, improve first responders’ access to lifesaving mental health resources and benefits programs and crack down on dangerous contraband in federal prisons. As always, I’m proud to Back the Blue and will continue my work to make sure these critical bills are signed into law.”

Grassley led 65 of his Senate colleagues in a resolution this week recognizing the service and sacrifice of America’s courageous law enforcement officers and their families.

Additionally, the Judiciary Committee advanced by voice vote TREY’s Law, which would void non-disclosure agreements silencing survivors of child sexual abuse. The committee also reported the following nominations:

• Justin D. Smith, to be United States Circuit Judge for the Eighth Circuit, by a vote of 12-10.
• Jeffrey M. Kuhlman, to be United States District Judge for the District of Kansas, by a vote of 12-10.
• Anthony W. Mattivi, to be United States District Judge for the District of Kansas, by a vote of 12-10.
• Anthony J. Powell, to be United States District Judge for the District of Kansas, by a vote of 12-10.
• Timothy VerHey, to be United States Attorney for the Western District of Michigan, by a vote of 20-2.
• James Arnott, to be United States Marshal for the Western District of Missouri, by a vote of 12-10.
• Jack Chambers, to be United States Marshal for the Southern District of West Virginia, by a vote of 16-6.
• Jason Holt, to be United States Marshal for the Northern District of Oklahoma, by a vote of 16-6.
