Feinstein Supports Bill to Protect Special Counsel

Washington—Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today announced her support for legislation introduced by Senators Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and Chris Coons (D-Del.) to protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller from political interference.

“While Justice Department regulations already state that the president can’t fire a special counsel, passage of this bill by both chambers of Congress, regardless of whether or not the president signs it, would send a clear message to President Trump that any effort to do so won’t be tolerated," said Senator Feinstein.

The bill codifies existing Justice Department regulations that state a special counsel may only be fired for good cause, mandates that only a Senate-confirmed official may fire a special counsel and provides a legal process that would allow a special counsel to be reinstated if improperly terminated.
