Feinstein Statement on Santa Clarita Shooting

Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement on the shooting at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, Calif.:

            “Today we’re confronted with yet another heartbreaking school shooting. Once again I ask, when will enough be enough?

            “We know at least five students were shot in Santa Clarita and at least two are dead. Let’s be clear: These school shootings are possible for one reason, because guns are too easily obtainable, even by children.

            “It has been nine long months since the House passed legislation to implement universal background checks, a proposal supported by more than 90 percent of Americans. Yet Senate Republicans continue to block this bill.

            “In fact, they’re blocking every single bill that would help protect our children from gun violence. In addition to background checks, we’ve introduced bills to ban assault weapons, ban high-capacity ammunition magazines, promote extreme risk prevention orders and raise the age to buy assault rifles. We should be voting on these bills today, but Senate Republicans refuse to bring them up for votes.

            “Congress has the ability to reduce these mass shootings. What is lacking is courage among Senate Republicans and the president to actually take action.”
