Durbin, Grassley Introduce Resolution Designating September As National Democracy Month

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today introduced a Senate resolution designating September 2022 as National Democracy Month. The resolution asks Americans to reflect on the contributions of the system of government of the United States to a more free and stable world.

“Our democracy is only as strong as our commitment to relentlessly pursue its ideals of liberty and justice for all,” Durbin said. “Today’s resolution affirms our commitment to the multi-generational endeavor to protect and advance our shared democratic ideals. I’m proud to introduce this resolution with Senator Grassley and hope the Senate can pass it soon.”

“American representative democracy has been a shining light of self-governance for nearly two and a half centuries. The founding of our country and our system of government have protected our inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Our resolution reaffirms our commitment to those founding principles and to upholding our system so human freedom can continue to flourish in the United States,” Grassley said.
