Durbin Delivers Opening Statement During Latest Nominations Hearing

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today delivered an opening statement at the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the nominations of Nancy Abudu, to be United States District Judge for the Eleventh Circuit; Judge J. Michelle Childs, to be United States District Judge for the D.C. Circuit; Nusrat Choudhury, to be United States District Judge for the Eastern District of New York; Judge Ana de Alba, to be United States District Judge for the Eastern District of California; and Natasha Merle, to be United States District Judge for the Eastern District of New York.

Key quotes:

“As has been true throughout the 117th Congress, today’s slate represents a cross-section of the legal profession—we have sitting federal and state judges, civil rights attorneys, and those who have spent time in private legal practice and state administrative agencies.”

“These nominees—like our two nominees who already hold judicial office—understand the difference between the role of an advocate and a judge.”
