Durbin: Judge Garland is the Right Nominee at This Moment to Lead the Justice Department

Durbin calls on his colleagues to support Judge Garland’s nomination to be the next Attorney General ahead of cloture vote

WASHINGTON – Ahead of the cloture vote on Judge Merrick Garland’s nomination to be the next U.S. Attorney General, U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today called on his Senate colleagues to support Judge Garland’s nomination.  Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee advanced the nomination of Judge Garland by a bipartisan vote of 15-7.  Durbin has argued that Judge Garland is the right leader to restore integrity and the rule of law to the Justice Department and combat domestic terrorism and systemic racism following four tumultuous years under the previous administration.

“He [Judge Garland] is, simply put, the right nominee to lead the Justice Department.  I believe that’s true for three primary reasons – one, his integrity; two, his experience; and three, his humility,” Durbin said in a speech on the Senate floor.  “I look forward to voting for him [Judge Garland].  I urge all of my colleagues to do the same.”
