Documents

The Senate Judiciary Committee creates and processes hundreds of documents every Congress.  The documents created by the Committee vary from letters to various department heads, to important oversight letters and documents.  Other documents include Chairman's Rulings, subpoenas and subpoena authorizations.

These documents help internal staff and the public better understand the issues that face the Committee every day.  They contribute to the important legislative and oversight functions that are a major part of the Judiciary Committee's jurisdiction.

Did You Know?  The Federal Judiciary Act of 1789 required Supreme Court justices, in addition to presiding on the Supreme Court, to "ride the circuit," and preside over circuit court cases.  The death of James Iredell, one of the original Supreme Court Justices, was said to be due in part to illness caused by harsh weather conditions when riding the circuit.  Supreme Court justices continued to "ride the circuit" until 1891.
